So, there's my problem. The best way to get development from Zel is to let a Good End hang over him, but I don't want to leave Hydracula. What I think I'll do is wait at least until Akin gets his feet more under him, and a couple of memories. Then I'll re-evaluate.

So, essay... I haven't done this for a while. Bad player.

I haven't had Zel take his memory on-screen yet, even though I totally should by the last Vulpecula post. I think he was distracted by 'dammit Graces, this is inconvenient'. And, well, this was important.

Zel in Sabra )

Other Things

The Graveyard mini-game was hilarious, since... well threats and insults were expected from Ophi. Flirtation was totally unexpected. And Zle isn't sure how serious he should take it -- on the one hand, it was a distraction tactic that worked. On the other, apparently he won a date. On the third... wtfdate with weird teenaged boy Ophi.

This recent game... it bothers him, since they wouldn't have had to hurt Poppy, who Zel likes, if they hadn't chosen Masamune (or Canis in general). On the other hand... if they had chosen Jace, then Poppy would have been killed during the Canis death match. So, Zel might bring by a couple of fish or lizards anonymously as sort of a 'sorry we had to cut off your ear, have some protein to speed healing'. Zel... isn't too concerned about being a puppy-mutilating monster, since... well, Zel is about average morality for Hydracula, and he was kind of a ruthless dude in his memories. He feels bad, and wants to Rah Tilt the Judges' throne/the Arena ceiling until something dies*, but there isn't this 'am I a monster?' bouncing around his head.

It also bothers him that, despite all their actions, Mirror might be coming for Vulpecula again. Since Vulpecula did lose, even if they managed to not die, thanks to Flowers's intervention.

If no one else volunteers, or Mirror doesn't grab anyone she hasn't grabbed before, and we owe Mirror a penalty, Zel will try to volunteer to take it, under the basis that he knows he's the sane one. Even though he is scared shitless of Mirror. Because... dammit, they've had to go into minds to fix Trixie and Gray, Lucky is... Lucky, Jinx still has multiple personalities, and Black isn't exactly on an even keel.

* Zel knows this is Not Helpful, so he won't be doing it. Doesn't mean he can't construct elaborate revenge fantasies.

Okay, deciding what to do about the kid game aka Kawaii la Tau aka Sabra La Adorable.

Anyway, I figure I have two options for Zel:

Option 1: Use Existing Human!Zel Icons
Plenty of examples already uploaded, all nicely tagged.
Pros: No work on my part!
It's canon, folks!
Cons: human!Zel looks young, but more '13-15' than 'a kid'. I mean, from my perspective, '13-15' is still pretty kid-like, but it's really only about five years younger than Zel's canon age, and was what I used to represent 20-ish human!Zel.

Option 2: Find a Kid with Zel's Hair and use that
Considering Mannen from Prétear, who is a ten year old with ice powers. Also easy to recolor, since he has light hair. Some samples I did -- the first was from a color page of the manga, the second from a B&W page. Also, I have the first disc of the anime.

Pros: Someone who looks distinctly pre-pubescent and younger than Zel.
Adorableness +5
Cons: Making new icons. And coloring new icons.
I'm not used to manga art for Zel. (I could go with the anime, but that means screen captures, while scans of the manga exist online.)
I can't put my finger on why, but the icons remind me of Chika. Maybe just something in the facial expression with wild, pale hair.
Admitting I read Prétear. (Too late.)

What do you all think?

Okay, Zel's outside a mansion and watching a fight -- three people (Lina, Amelia and Gourry) versus a swordsman, some monsters and a bunch of doubles of a sorcerer. He jumps in through the window, on seeing that Lina, Amelia and Gourry are surrounded, and dispatches a copy. He also throws a knife at a person in the shadows, and tells the others that she's the puppet-master behind the copies.

I'll do the relationship meme that's been going around. So if you want to hear me ramble about relationships with Zel, Tailmon or Marla, have at it.

Also, general questions are game too.

Memory 9: Surveying a Lina-created crater with Zolf
Zelgadis is standing around with an injured man in a cloak (Zolf) looking at a very large smoking crater created via magic spell. Apparently he and the the man are trying to retrieve stolen property from some woman, who set his companion on fire, and then created the crater. He's annoyed by this, and his companion is prone to ludicrous threats towards this person.

Memory 10: Femile
Zel is walking with Lina, Gourry, Amelia and Xellos (who he knows) and Martina (who he knows in the memory, but this is his first memory of her). For some reason, the men are all in drag and disguising themselves as women. Gourry is bitching about it, and Zel doesn't feel comfortable either. Anyway, they're leaving, but Zel stops when he sees someone (Miwan) sitting alone.

He goes up and she thanks him for saving her. Miwan goes on about how she's trapped by parental expectations, and wants to be like Zelgadis, who is free to come and go as he pleases. Zel tells her that she can change the future if she wants. Then Lina comes in and drags him off while teasing him about making time with a pretty girl. (Later we find out Miwan is actually a pretty boy pressured into being the daughter his mother wanted, and sick of it.)

Memory 11: Zelgadis is a Scary Monster
So, this is from Evolution-R, but a flashback. Shortly after Rezo transformed Zel, but before Zel learned why, Zel is walking into a town where Rezo is being all Great Sage and Helper of the Helpless. A group of kids -- ones Rezo had healed and Zel and his gang had given stuff bought via bandit money earlier -- runs into him while playing. Zel catches one and helps him up. When the kid notices who it was that helped him, he freaks out and screams about monsters, and the kids run like hell. As soon as Zel realizes they mean him, he panics and tries to hide his face in his collar.

State of the Zel
His mood is improving a lot. Winning this game -- a clear win, even if Gambler poo-poo'd their lack of cheating* -- felt good, especially since it felt like he had won based on guessing about the number of die rolls to risk versus just blind chance. It also made him feel good for his team -- the new guy got his first memory.

He's a bit concerned about Lucky, since she obviously got a bad memory, while his was just strange. On the other hand he's not sure what to do about that, besides be extra nice to her.

* Zel doesn't particularly have a moral objection to cheating, especially if part of the game is 'the guy running doesn't care as long as you aren't blatant and don't get caught'. On the other hand, he sees no point if you can win by skill or chance alone.

You know it's weird to be playing Zel for the equivalent of two months for him to not have any sign of self-loathing because of his body. Even Rezo's betrayal is affecting him in different ways because it wasn't about being a chimera, but about luring him into helping Rezo do something Dumb and kill his allies. And by typing that out, I just realized Zel has a new complex that is Unrelated to 'I want to be human again because I am a horrible monster that scares small children'*.

In conclusion, Zel hasn't really gotten anything earth-shaking recently. Mostly a better idea that he's some kind of mercenary who knows swordplay and magic, and who travels a lot with crazy people. And that he was involved in serious shit at least sometimes. He knows he was human, and now he's not quite, but he assumes it was voluntary, or that he at least considered the tradeoffs worth it.

Day 23

Zel was in a series of tunnels (like the caves, only obviously artificial -- made of quarried stone) with people -- Lina, Gourry, Xellos, Filia and Amelia, and was chasing someone for something. Lina splits the party at an intersection. Zel and Amelia head down the left path. They wander around for a while, with Amelia making marks on the wall, until they realize they've been going in circles. Zel makes some disparaging remarks about this being useless, when their quarry, a foxman, pops out with the sword. Amelia grabs him and they reclaim the sword.
